The name Manili is composed of the first letters of the cities Maastricht, Amsterdam, Nice and Lisbon. EU history was made in these cities.
Put the first letters of the following four cities together and you get our brand name Manili:
But why these four cities?
In each of these cities important events of European integration have taken place.
Since the Second World War, a large number of treaties have been concluded between European states. The Treaty of Maastricht finally created the European Union in 1992. The subsequent treaties in Amsterdam and Nice changed significant components. In 2009, the EU as we know it today was finally created in the Treaty of Lisbon.
In memory of this historically unique process, Manili has named itself after the treaties that created the EU and carries European integration as DNA in its name.
The Treaties
Maastricht
The Treaty of Maastricht established the European Union in 1992. The treaty replaced the 1957 Treaties of Rome and created the EU as an overarching association of the European Communities, the Common Foreign and Security Policy, and cooperation in the fields of justice and home affairs.
Amsterdam
The Treaty of Amsterdam adopted amendments to the Treaty on European Union and the Treaties establishing the European Communities in 1997.
Nice
Nice also introduced a number of changes. The most important innovation was that in many areas European decisions could henceforth be taken by qualified majority rather than unanimity of the member states.
Lisbon
The Lisbon Treaty was signed in 2007 and entered into force in 2009. After the EU Constitutional Treaty failed in referendums in France and the Netherlands in 2005, the essential elements were incorporated into the Lisbon Treaty. The EU and the EC merged into a single legal entity, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights was made legally binding and, for the first time, an EU exit was also regulated.
